Filhoses

 Today is Terça-feira Gordo (Fat Tuesday).  The day before lent starts. Portuguese tradition is to make/ eat Filhoses and watch carnival dances at the local hall or gather at someones home and celebrate the coming of Easter.  Filhoses is translated into portuguese donut.  A bread like batter that is fried in oil piece by piece then then quickly dipped in sugar and served with coffee or on its on. YUM!  Can you say sky high cholesterol and an added 10lbs on your butt QUICK!  But they are just soo good and of course you can't eat just one, especially when they are warm. 



Ingredients:
  • 6 cups flour
  • 3 (1 ounce) packages yeast
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8 eggs, beaten room temperature
  • 2 cups milk, warmed
  • 1/4 lb butter, melted (1 stick butter)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Directions...Total Time: 1.25 Hours
  1. 1 Mix all ingredients together
    with hands for 5 minutes until dough is smooth.
  2. 2 Let rise 1 hour.
  3. 3 Pull off various size pieces and
    fry in hot oil.
  4. 4 Drain on towels and sprinkle
    with sugar.
